Of course, you can always not pay. No one will know. And besides, why would you? The essay isn’t exactly a money-making enterprise. It’s not like a young novel or a greeting card or a bumper sticker. You can’t even adapt it. An essayist would have to be pretty thick to think you’d pay for it? Seems more like you’re doing the essayist a favor. Seems more like if anyone should get paid it's you. Why can't you have a button that lets you set your price for reading something like this? It’s your time, isn't it? Shouldn’t a writer pay you for it?
